Can stucco be applied directly over poured concrete walls in Ottawa?

Yes — poured concrete is actually one of the better substrates for stucco application, and it's a common scenario in Ottawa where homeowners want to improve the appearance of exposed foundation walls. But "directly over" comes with some important conditions that are specific to our climate and the type of concrete you're dealing with.

When Direct Application Works

Stucco bonds well to poured concrete when the surface is clean, rough, and properly prepared. The Portland cement in the stucco mix has a natural chemical affinity with the Portland cement in the concrete — they want to bond. On raw, unpainted concrete with a slightly rough texture, you can apply stucco directly after cleaning and dampening the surface.

For Ottawa foundation walls, the typical approach is:

• Clean the surface: Pressure wash at 2,500 to 3,000 PSI to remove dirt, efflorescence (that white powdery residue common on Ottawa basement walls), and any loose material- Dampen the concrete: Wet the wall thoroughly, then let it reach a "saturated surface dry" condition — damp but not dripping.
