Absolutely — applying stucco to a previously unparged garage foundation is a common project in Ottawa, and it's one of the best ways to protect exposed concrete block or poured concrete from our harsh freeze-thaw cycles while giving the garage a finished look.

Preparing an Unparged Garage Foundation for Stucco

An unparged foundation has been exposed to Ottawa weather for its entire life, so preparation is more involved than working on new construction:

• Clean thoroughly: Pressure wash at 2,500–3,000 PSI to remove dirt, efflorescence (the white salt deposits common on Ottawa foundations), loose mortar, and any paint or coatings. The surface needs to be clean and porous for stucco to bond.
• Repair cracks and damage: Fill any cracks wider than 3 mm with hydraulic cement. Ottawa garage foundations commonly have step cracks in block walls from frost heave — these need proper repair before coating, not just covering up.
