This is one of the most important questions you can ask about stucco construction in Ottawa, and the short answer is: yes, a drainage cavity or rain screen detail is strongly recommended for any new stucco installation in our climate. Here's why Ottawa's conditions make this especially critical.

Why Ottawa Stucco Benefits From a Rain Screen

Traditional stucco was applied as a "face-sealed" system — the stucco itself was the only line of defence against water. This works in dry climates, but Ottawa gets approximately 940mm of annual precipitation, combined with 40–50 freeze-thaw cycles and wind-driven rain that can push water upward through cracks and joints.
