How does EIFS handle Ottawa's extreme temperature swings from summer to winter?
Ottawa's temperature range — from +35°C humidex days in July to –30°C wind chills in January — is one of the most demanding climates in Canada for any cladding system. The good news is that a properly installed EIFS system actually handles these extremes remarkably well, and in some ways performs better than traditional cladding materials under thermal stress.
Why EIFS Performs Well in Ottawa's Climate
The key advantage is that EIFS places continuous insulation on the outside of the wall sheathing. This means the structural components of your wall — the studs, sheathing, and interior finishes — stay at a relatively stable temperature year-round. In a conventional wall with batt insulation between the studs, the studs themselves act as thermal bridges, allowing cold to penetrate directly through the wall. EIFS eliminates those thermal bridges entirely.

The embedded mesh in the base coat distributes stress across the surface, preventing localized cracking at joints, corners, and transitions where movement is concentrated.- Expansion joints. On larger Ottawa homes, EIFS installations should include expansion joints at intervals recommended by the manufacturer — typically every 3–4 metres horizontally and at floor lines. These joints absorb building movement without transferring stress to the finish.
