Should I use fibreglass mesh or metal lath for stucco in Ottawa?

This depends entirely on which stucco system you're using. Fibreglass mesh and metal lath serve different roles, and confusing them is one of the most common misunderstandings Ottawa homeowners run into when getting stucco quotes.

When to Use Each Reinforcement

Metal lath (expanded metal or welded wire) is required for traditional three-coat stucco. It's mechanically fastened to the wall framing and provides the structural grip that holds 3/4" to 7/8" of heavy cementitious material to your house. Use standard weight mesh (4.5 oz/sq yd) for flat wall areas and detail mesh (double layer or heavier weight) around window and door openings, corners, and any stress points.
