What is EIFS and how does it differ from traditional stucco in Ottawa?

EIFS stands for Exterior Insulation and Finish System — it's a multi-layered wall cladding that combines insulation and a stucco-like finish into one integrated system. While it looks similar to traditional stucco from the street, the two are fundamentally different in construction, performance, and cost. Understanding the distinction matters for Ottawa homeowners because our climate puts extreme demands on exterior wall systems.

How EIFS and Traditional Stucco Compare

Traditional stucco (also called hard-coat stucco) is a cement-based plaster applied in two or three coats directly over metal lath attached to the wall sheathing.
