What is elastomeric paint and is it worth using on stucco in Ottawa?

Elastomeric paint is a thick, high-build coating designed specifically for masonry and stucco surfaces. Think of it as a flexible, waterproof membrane that moves with your walls rather than cracking against them. For Ottawa stucco, it's one of the smartest investments you can make — and here's why.

How Elastomeric Paint Works and Why Ottawa Needs It

The science: Elastomeric coatings are typically 10–20 times thicker than standard house paint (10–20 mils wet versus 1–3 mils for regular latex). Once dry, the film can stretch 300–500% of its original size and snap back without cracking. This elasticity is the key feature — Ottawa stucco expands and contracts constantly through our extreme temperature swings, and regular paint simply can't keep up.

Why it matters in Ottawa: Our climate puts stucco through roughly 100+ freeze-thaw cycles per year, particularly in spring and fall when temperatures cross the 0°C mark daily.
