What is the best substrate for stucco application on a wood-frame home in Ottawa?

For wood-frame homes in Ottawa, the substrate assembly matters enormously because wood framing moves — it expands and contracts with moisture and temperature changes that are extreme in our climate. The right substrate system prevents cracking, manages moisture, and gives the stucco a solid base to grip.

The Recommended Substrate Assembly

The Ontario Building Code and industry best practice call for a layered system over wood framing, not just a single product. Here's what a proper stucco substrate looks like on an Ottawa wood-frame home, from the studs outward:

• Structural sheathing: Either plywood (minimum 3/8") or OSB. Plywood is the stronger choice for Ottawa because OSB is more susceptible to moisture damage if the weather-resistive barrier ever fails.
